How I Landed My First Internship Through TechConnect

James Park February 5, 2026 6 min read

When I joined TechConnect as a sophomore with zero industry experience, I never imagined that within a year I would be interning at a top tech company. Here is my story of how this club changed my career trajectory.

The Starting Point

I came to university knowing I liked computers but had no real programming experience beyond a single intro course. I was intimidated by classmates who had been coding since middle school. TechConnect's 'No Experience Required' tagline gave me the courage to show up.

Building Skills Through Workshops

The weekly workshops were game-changers. I went from struggling with basic HTML to building full-stack applications in about four months. The hands-on format and patient mentors made all the difference.

The Hackathon That Changed Everything

At our spring hackathon, I joined a team of fellow beginners. We built a simple but functional campus navigation app. We did not win any prizes, but the experience of building something under pressure, collaborating with a team, and presenting to judges was invaluable.

Networking & Opportunities

TechConnect's industry speaker events connected me with professionals I never would have met otherwise. After a guest lecture, I approached a speaker from Microsoft about their internship program. She remembered me from my hackathon presentation and offered to refer me.

The Takeaway

My advice: join clubs, build things, show up consistently, and do not be afraid to talk to people. The tech community is incredibly welcoming, and organizations like TechConnect exist to bridge the gap between classroom and career.
